2:00Pm - 3:00Pm	Presentation by American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) System Thinking Applications in Maritime: Navigating Energy Efficiency & Autonomy Modern ships have become more complex with new technologies incorporating diverse sensors, automation, network and other advanced control systems. In such cases, ships can be viewed as a system-of-systems, where multiple independent constituent systems work together to deliver the required function and performance. With the increase in the inter-connectivity and dependency between multiple constituent systems, one challenge is to effectively manage the structure, requirements, or behavior changes while maintaining the interoperability between these systems. For these complex systems, holistic system thinking and model-based approaches such as model-based systems engineering (MBSE) could be a potential approach to meet the challenge. The idea of MBSE is to replace physical documents with integrated digital models of systems that can capture the system requirements, function, structure, interfaces, and behaviors. Information from different disciplines can be gathered into one integrated or a collection of models to provide a single source of truth. This presentation discusses how complex systems such as autonomous, hybrid electric propulsion systems can leverage on the system thinking and MBSE approach to support design, analysis, verification and validation activities from concept design to development phases.
