To attract, retain and upskill talent in the fast-transforming maritime sector, a set of initiatives were unveiled today by Mr Niam Chiang Meng, Chairman of Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA). The announcement was made at the Maritime Manpower Forum, jointly organised by MPA and the Singapore Maritime Foundation (SMF), which was held in conjunction with the Singapore Maritime Week (SMW) 2021. The International Advisory Panel on Maritime Decarbonisation (IAP) formed in July 2020 by the Singapore Maritime Foundation (SMF), with the support of the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA), has submitted its recommendations to the Singapore Government. The IAP has identified nine pathways to maritime decarbonisation, including policy options to accelerate the transition and ways in which Maritime Singapore can support the industry’s decarbonisation.

The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) officially launched Singapore’s first Maritime Drone Estate (MDE) today, in conjunction with the 15th Singapore Maritime Week. Located near Marina South Pier with close proximity to the anchorages, the MDE provides a conducive space to test bed and develop drone technologies for maritime applications such as shore-to-ship deliveries and remote ship inspections.

A new Maritime Innovation and Technology (MINT) Fund grant scheme will provide maritime technology start-ups in Singapore a leg-up to develop scalable solutions. In addition, the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) will push for wider industry adoption of digitalisation initiatives such as electronic bills of lading (eBL) and electronic bunker delivery note (eBDN) to drive productivity for the sector. These were announced today by Mr Chee Hong Tat, Senior Minister of State for Foreign Affairs and Transport, at the 5th Singapore Maritime Technology Conference (SMTC). The SMTC is one of the key events organised in the Singapore Maritime Week 2021.

The fourth edition of the Advanced Maritime Leaders’ Programme (AMLP) will focus on leadership in the maritime industry amidst a global crisis arising from the COVID-19 pandemic and the challenges that the maritime sector is facing. Organised by the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) Academy, in partnership with the Singapore Management University, the five-day leadership programme kicked off today and is attended by 19 senior maritime officials from 14 countries and the International Maritime Organization (IMO).

Singapore Maritime Week (SMW) 2021 was officially opened this afternoon by Mr Ong Ye Kung, Minister for Transport, at the Marina Bay Sands Expo & Convention Centre. Held for the first time in a hybrid format, the theme for this year’s SMW is “New Frontiers, Shifting Paradigms”. The 15th Singapore Maritime Lecture and the 11th Singapore International Maritime Awards followed the Opening Ceremony of SMW 2021.
