Preparing Maritime Talent for Industry Transformation: The NUS MTM Approach

The maritime industry is undergoing rapid transformation driven by digitalisation, decarbonisation, and evolving global supply chains. These developments are not only reshaping technologies and operations, but also redefining the maritime workplace by changing job roles, skill requirements, decision making processes, and the way human expertise interacts with automated and data driven systems. As ports, shipping companies, and logistics networks become increasingly intelligent and interconnected, future maritime professionals must be equipped to operate in environments characterised by uncertainty, complexity, and continuous innovation.

In response to these shifts, preparing the next generation of maritime talent requires strong integration between education, research, and industry practice. This presentation introduces how the NUS MSc in Maritime Technology and Management programme prepares students for this evolving landscape through industry projects, technology driven case studies, guest lectures by industry leaders, industrial visits, and close collaboration with research initiatives such as the Centre of Excellence in Modelling and Simulation for Next Generation Ports (C4NGP). This integrated approach equips students with systems thinking, analytical capabilities, and practical insights to effectively navigate and contribute to the transformation of the maritime industry.
