SMU Maritime Thought Leadership Conference - Stakeholder Integration - Towards a Future Maritime Ecosystem Empowered by AI

Digitalisation has increasingly integrated maritime stakeholders over the past 15-20 years, accelerating with recent advances such as low-orbit satellite connectivity from Starlink and OneWeb. This conference examines how AI intensifies this integration by enabling low-cost, data-driven decision-making that blends collective past experience with real-time individual judgments. The focus is on how AI reshapes internal processes, relationships between companies and customers, and interactions with public authorities. Ultimately, the goal is to assess whether AI is transforming the core logic of the maritime ecosystem and what this means for industry stakeholders.

Knowledge Bank Shipping Roundtable

The maritime sector represents an important area of development, with significant potential to help bridge the looming job gap for the 1.2 billion young people who will reach working age over the next 15 years. Ports support industrial development, connect countries to regional and global markets, and generate millions of jobs worldwide. By investing in infrastructure, improving regulatory and business environments, and catalyzing the private sector – the three pillars of the World Bank Group's job strategy – this potential can be unlocked. The World Bank Group is an investor in maritime transport solutions across ports, ships, and marine operations. This is an invitation-only event. Show More

Safeguarding Lives at Sea: What's the Role for the Shipping Sector?

Maritime migration and rescue operations are a growing challenge globally, where busy shipping lanes intersect with mixed migration flows. The effective coordination of states, Maritime Rescue Coordination Centres (MRCCs), the commercial shipping sector, and international organizations is essential to safeguard lives at sea. The Foundation for Humanitarian Action at Sea (FHAS) in partnership with the S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies (RSIS) convenes this dialogue between operational and policy stakeholders to improve humanitarian responses at sea, bringing together governments, MRCCs, UN agencies, the shipping industry, and NGOs to tackle pressing operational and legal challenges. This initiative aims to foster trust and pave the way for practical solutions. Show More

Understanding the cost of electrifying harbor craft in Singapore: case of passenger launch vessel

Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore has made a commitment to drive its domestic harbour craft sector to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. Starting 2030, they require all newbuild harbour craft to be fully electric or capable of using B100 or compatible with other net-zero fuel. The ICCT is evaluating the cost of this transition with recommendations on how the operators and regulators could collaboratively make it happen. We will be presenting preliminary results on the passenger launch fleet and would like to take this opportunity to collect feedback to improve our analysis to better inform the public and help with decision making.
